TOURIST RESCUES WOMAN WHO FELL INTO THE SEA IN THE ISTANBUL STRAIT

Tourist Rana Parviz (69), who was learned to have fallen from a ferry off Üsküdar Beylerbeyi in the Bosphorus, was rescued by one person who jumped into the sea and was identified as a tourist. The woman was discharged after her treatment at the hospital. The captain of the yacht from which the person identified as a tourist jumped into the sea recounted those moments. Captain Orhan Kanburoğlu said, "We asked his wife, 'While a life is struggling there, I cannot even think of myself.' He just jumped directly, without taking anything off, even his phone. Truly admirable and something to be proud of."

The incident occurred on Friday, October 31, at 5:30 PM, off Üsküdar Beylerbeyi in the Bosphorus. According to the information obtained, a woman fell into the sea from the ferry she was on, for an as-yet unknown reason. One person, seeing the woman struggling in the water, jumped into the sea to rescue her. Those on nearby boats also tried to help the woman by throwing lifebuoys. The woman struggling in the sea was rescued by one person, identified as a tourist, who jumped into the water from a nearby yacht.

JUMPED INTO THE SEA AND RESCUED THE TOURIST WOMAN

The woman, fitted with a lifebuoy, was first brought onto a yacht in the sea. Upon notification, teams from the Coast Guard Command were dispatched to the scene. The woman, whose initial intervention was performed on the yacht by her rescuer and medical teams, was then taken to a Coast Guard boat. Rana Parviz, who was conscious and identified as a tourist, was transferred to the hospital by ambulance, and it was learned that her life was not in danger. Information was obtained that the woman, who was taken under treatment, was discharged. The moment of the incident was captured by a mobile phone camera.

'HE SUDDENLY JUMPED WHILE WE WERE LOOKING FOR HER LOCATION'

Captain Orhan Kanburoğlu of the yacht from which the tourist jumped into the sea said, "We were cruising in the strait. Beylerbeyi is already ahead of us, right across from us. On the Beylerbeyi side, a ferry made unusual movements, like stopping. At that time, people had already gathered. At the front of the ferry, we have our staff, Erhan Gemici. We looked with him, and there was a woman on the sea, motionless. While we were discussing what to do, how to intervene, how to get her out, there was also a tourist at the front. A foreign national, I honestly don't know where he was from. As we were locating the woman, he suddenly jumped."

'GREAT COURAGE'

Kanburoğlu said, "Bravo, great courage, he suddenly jumped. Once he jumped, this time it wasn't just the woman, we were now in a hurry to get both the woman and the man. The man was a good swimmer, frankly; lifebuoys were also thrown from the other ship. Thanks to that man, we also got the woman out. We carried out the first interventions this way, as much as we could. Afterwards, the Coast Guard and Coastal Safety teams arrived. We put the woman on a stretcher and sent her off like that."

'LIKELY FELL FROM THE FERRY'

Kanburoğlu said, "At first, she wasn't breathing, she had swallowed a lot of water. We drained the water, turned her on her side, opened her mouth, drained the water, and then she started breathing. After a while, just as we were taking her to the Coast Guard, the woman came to herself. She regained consciousness, opened her eyes; she even tried to stand up. We laid her back down, and then we took her to Beylerbeyi Pier. From there, they did things in the ambulance. We didn't see her fall from the ferry, but I probably estimate she fell from the ferry. Because there is no pier there, it was directly in front of the palace. And immediately after that, there is a Coastal Safety building; there is no shore from which one could enter or fall into the sea. I assume she fell from the ferry. She breathed; she had swallowed a lot of water, but she breathed."

'WHILE A LIFE IS STRUGGLING, I CANNOT THINK OF MYSELF'

Kanburoğlu said, "He himself didn't know English; I think it was his wife next to him. We asked his wife, and she said, 'While a life is struggling there, I cannot even think of myself.' He jumped directly, without taking anything off, even his phone. It's an admirable situation, one to be proud of. In a place you don't know at all, like Istanbul, which Istanbulites know well. The Bosphorus current is famous; he jumped without thinking, we truly congratulated him. We talked a lot through his wife here. He was also happy, pleased that the woman was rescued and breathing."

'WE DRIED HIM WITH A BLANKET AND TOWEL'

Kanburoğlu said, "We had blankets and towels here. We dried him with them and sat him under the air conditioning. I also gave him some of my clothes, and shoes. Afterwards, we rented a car and accompanied him to his hotel. We didn't leave the man halfway, so to speak."
