German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended the 2026 International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders watched the events held along the banks of the Sabarmati River as part of the festival.

Merz in Ahmedabad as Part of Official Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Ahmedabad, a city in India's Gujarat state, as part of a 2-day official visit. Merz was welcomed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A wreath was laid at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial as part of the program.

Leaders Gathered at the Kite Festival

Following official contacts, the two leaders attended the 2026 International Kite Festival held along the banks of the Sabarmati River. While colorful scenes emerged at the festival ground, the event filled the skies of Ahmedabad with kites.

Modi: India-Germany Friendship Continues to Grow Stronger

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on his social media account, stated: “During the International Kite Festival, the skies of Ahmedabad are filled with color and vibrancy. I am delighted to have taken German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to this very special event. Furthermore, seeing him attempt to fly a kite also made me very happy. The friendship between India and Germany continues to grow through shared values, comprehensive cooperation, and mutual understanding.”

Merz: Partnership with India a Priority for Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, on the other hand, stated that the partnership with India is a high priority for Germany, saying: “Dear Narendra Modi, thank you for inviting me to your home state of Gujarat. I greatly value this special gesture of yours and the friendly and open exchange of ideas we had.”
