Asia-based airline Cathay Pacific has launched flights on the Munich – Hong Kong route. The flights, which will be operated four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), will be operated with Airbus A350-900 type aircraft. The new route offers connection opportunities to Asia, Australia and New Zealand via Hong Kong, while making Munich a transit point for European and North American connections.

Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers stated that Hong Kong and its surroundings are one of Asia's most important economic regions with a population of over 85 million, and said that this route strengthens Munich Airport's role in trade and tourism traffic between Europe and Asia.

Cathay Pacific's Regional General Manager Europe, Brian Tsoi, stated that the addition of Munich to their network provides a new direct connection for both business and leisure travel, and that this route facilitates access to over 100 destinations via Hong Kong.

Upon the first flight's landing in Munich, the plane was greeted with a traditional water salute. Gingerbread cookies were distributed to passengers as a souvenir. A symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on the apron before the first departure.

Cathay Pacific's cargo subsidiary, Cathay Cargo, operated flights from Munich to Hong Kong via Brussels and Dubai between 2004–2008. With the new passenger route, businesses in Bavaria and the surrounding area will now be able to deliver their cargo directly to Hong Kong.
