AHMET ARAS' CALL FOR "TAX JUSTICE" FOR TOURISM CITIES
Ahmet Aras, Mayor of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, emphasized that a tourism tax similar to the practices in Europe should be implemented in Turkey in order to meet the increasing service load in tourism cities.
Ahmet Aras, Mayor of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, drew attention to the financial imbalances faced by tourism cities and stated that a "tourism tax" should also be implemented in Turkey.
According to the news in Ekonomi newspaper, Aras, speaking at the general assembly meeting where the activities of İller Bankası for 2024 were discussed, stated that the municipal budgets of cities such as Antalya, Muğla and Aydın are seriously strained due to the large difference between the summer and winter population. "Our expenditures during the season reach three to five times our income. This is not sustainable," said Aras, emphasizing that the daily tax system per tourist applied in Europe should also be put on the agenda in Turkey.
Ahmet Aras also stated that the fact that the tax centers of companies operating in sectors such as tourism, construction and maritime are mostly in other cities reduces the income shares of the regions where production is made. “Fair sharing of tax revenues should be ensured. Income is generated here, but tax is paid in another city,” he said.
